There are many products on the market that claim to stop hair loss and regrow your hair. But the majority of those are geared towards men.
However, more than 40 percent of hair loss sufferers in the US are women (1). This is why more companies are beginning to create their own lines of hair loss products geared towards women. One such company? Keranique.
In this post, I’m going to introduce Keranique and its line of keratin-based hair products. This will include a look at how it works, what users have to say, and the cost and availability.
But before we get into the review, it’s first important to understand the structure of the hair follicle and how keratin may help.
The Structure of the Hair
The hair is composed of various parts, but the major structures include the papilla, hair matrix, the root sheath, and the bulge.
The hair strand itself (composed of the cuticle, cortex, and medulla) is found within the follicle. This is composed of the papilla and bulge as well as the sebaceous gland and the hair erector muscle.
The Cause of Female Pattern Hair Loss
So what is it that causes hair loss in women in the first place?
There are many causes, which range from hormonal to environmental to lifestyle-based. But one of the most common causes of hair loss in men and women is genetic.
Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) is a condition characterized by progressive hair loss at the forehead and temples (in men) and at the crown (in women).
There are many factors that contribute to its development, but the main is believed to be sensitivity to the androgen DHT (2). When DHT attaches to the androgen receptor at the follicle in those who are sensitive, it triggers a process called follicle miniaturization.
This leads to inflammation of the follicle which eventually causes it to miniaturize and produce shorter, thinner hairs.
Can Keratin Help?
One major component of hair that I have yet to mention is its makeup.
As a filament-forming protein, keratin contributes to the fiber-like structure of the hair strand. And this also very likely contributes to tissue resilience.
In theory, then, supplementing with keratin will support the hair structure and promote flexibility, durability, and resiliency. But there’s also evidence to suggest that keratin will also accelerate wound healing and skin repair which can be beneficial for damage caused to the scalp as a result of hair loss (5).
What is Keranique?
Keranique is a line of hair products aimed at women for the purpose of hair growth. These products include a scalp stimulating shampoo, a volumizing keratin conditioner, and even a total hair regrowth system.
How It Works
According to the website, Keranique is meant to be used as a three-step process to regrow your hair.
Step 1: Cleanse
The first step in the process includes the use of the Scalp Stimulating Shampoo and the Volumizing Keratin Conditioner.
The Shampoo contains keratin and Pro Vitamin B5 which deep cleans, removes build up, and promotes blood circulation to the scalp. The Conditioner thickens, fortifies, and volumizes your hair with the help of the proprietary Keratin Amino Complex.
Step 2: Regrow
The Keranique® Hair Regrowth Treatment is the next product in the line up and, according to the company’s website, it “features the only FDA-Approved ingredient clinically proven to help women re-grow hair.”
This product is to be used twice per day, every day.
Step 3: Protect and Style
The final step includes the use of the Lift & Repair Treatment Spray.
The product is said to add instant body, bounce, and shine to the hair while also protecting the hair strands against heat and other styling techniques.
When combined, this treatment protocol is supposed to not only regrow hair but also protect it from further damage and hair loss.
The “Secret” Ingredient
As mentioned above, Keranique contains the only FDA-approved ingredient that’s been shown to induce hair growth in women. What is that ingredient? Minoxidil.
Minoxidil is a topical hair growth formula that was initially developed for the treatment of hypertension (6). But a “side effect” of the drug was hair growth.
This discovery soon led to the development of minoxidil as a topical treatment.
This topical formula – more commonly known as Rogaine – has been shown in various research studies to stop hair loss associated with AGA and even regrow hair.
The majority of these studies have been conducted on men, as female hair loss can often be a more complicated matter (7). However, that’s not to say that studies on minoxidil use in women have not been performed.
One study published in 1990 analyzed the data on minoxidil use in female patients suffering from hair loss (8). As the study ultimately concluded: “Examination of this study demonstrates that topical minoxidil may be effective in treating this type of hair loss in women.”
These results were backed by further studies on the topic in the 2000s and 2010s (9).
User Reviews: Is Keranique the Real Deal?
Even with a look at the company’s claimed features and benefits, it’s important to learn more about what real users have to say.
The overwhelming majority of users have good things to say about the quality of the product, and they frequently praise the way it makes their hair feel (“fuller” and “more texturized”). The Hair Regrowth product in particular is said to not leave the hair feeling greasy or sticky, and for the vast majority of reviewers it doesn’t seem to irritate the scalp.
But what about results?
There are many users who are a bit surprised by how long it takes to begin to see results. This is par for the course with minoxidil products (or, really, any hair growth products), though.
However, for the users who have seen results they are quite happy with them.
These may not be drastic results with complete regrowth, but they include the filling in of previously thinning hair and a thicker feel and look.
Cost and Availability
Keranique is an as-seen-on-TV product that can be found at many retail chains, including ULTA, Sephora, Walmart, and CVS. It can also be found at Amazon.
The Keranique range includes single products, as well as regrowth systems. As such, the product line price varies quite widely.
The Keranique Deep Hydration Hair Regrowth System, for example, can be purchased for $56.04 at Amazon. This same system can be found at Ulta for $49 but shipping is not free until you reach $50.
The single products such as the Scalp Stimulating Shampoo and Volumizing Keratin Conditioner can be purchased for $20 each.
If you’re suffering from hair loss, you may be wondering what you can do to stop it and even regrow your hair. And while there are many products available, Keranique is one that stands out.
Keranique is a line of hair care products that includes minoxidil, the only FDA-approved drug for the treatment of female pattern balding. It also includes keratin, which is a protein that’s been proven necessary for the health and wellbeing of hair.
